Your Child's First Dental Visit in Irvine: What to Expect
Your child's first dental visit should happen by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming in, whichever comes first. That's the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association. At Sand Canyon Dental in Irvine, we see children, parents and grandparents in the same office, so your family can book visits together. Call 949-727-9077 to schedule.
Why start so early?
Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth, help children chew and speak, and can get cavities as soon as they appear. An early visit lets the dentist check how teeth are coming in, spot early signs of decay, and show you how to clean your child's teeth at home. It also helps your child get used to the dental office before they ever need treatment, which makes future visits easier.
What happens at the first visit
A short, gentle exam. The dentist looks at your child's teeth, gums and bite. Very young children often sit on a parent's lap.
A cleaning if your child is ready. For toddlers this may be a quick polish.
Fluoride if recommended to help protect teeth from decay.
Time for your questions about brushing, teething, thumb-sucking, bottles and diet.
X-rays are usually not needed at the first visit for very young children; the dentist will recommend them only when they're useful.
How to prepare your child
Book a time of day when your child is usually rested and in a good mood.
Keep the explanation simple and positive, like "the dentist will count your teeth."
Avoid words like "hurt" or "shot," and don't pass on your own dental worries.
Read a picture book about visiting the dentist or play "dentist" at home with a toothbrush.
Bring a favorite toy or blanket.
Keeping kids' teeth healthy between visits
Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste: a smear the size of a grain of rice for children under 3, and a pea-sized amount for ages 3 to 6.
Help with brushing until your child can do it well on their own, usually around age 7 or 8.
Start flossing once teeth touch each other.
Limit juice and sugary snacks, and don't put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
Schedule checkups every six months. Ask about sealants once permanent molars come in, and sports mouthguards for active kids.
