Seeing a little pink in the sink after brushing is common, but it isn't something to ignore. Healthy gums usually don't bleed. In most cases, bleeding is your gums' way of telling you they are irritated, and the earlier you act, the easier it is to fix.
Common causes of bleeding gums
Plaque buildup and gingivitis. Plaque that sits along the gumline irritates the gums and makes them red, puffy, and quick to bleed. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease.
Brushing too hard. A hard-bristled brush or heavy pressure can irritate the gums.
Starting to floss again. Gums often bleed for the first several days of a new flossing routine, then settle down.
Gum disease (periodontitis). If gingivitis isn't treated, it can progress to periodontitis, which affects the tissue and bone that hold teeth in place.
Other health factors. Some medications and changes in overall health can make gums bleed more easily. Tell your dentist about any medications you take.
What you can do at home
Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush, using gentle circles along the gumline.
Floss once a day. Mild bleeding at first is normal and usually improves within a week or two.
Don't stop brushing or flossing an area because it bleeds. That usually makes the irritation worse.
Keep up with regular checkups and cleanings.
When to see a dentist
Schedule a visit if your gums still bleed after one to two weeks of good brushing and flossing, or if you notice any of these signs:
Red, swollen, or tender gums
Gums that look like they are pulling away from your teeth
Persistent bad breath
Teeth that feel loose or a bite that feels different
Pus or a bump on the gums
How a dentist treats bleeding gums
Your dentist will examine your gums and may take digital X-rays to check the bone around your teeth. Early gum irritation often improves with a professional dental cleaning and exam plus better home care. For deeper gum disease, treatment may include scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning below the gumline.
At Sand Canyon Dental, some patients also benefit from Perio Protect, an FDA-cleared system that uses custom trays to deliver medication below the gumline at home. It is used alongside professional cleanings, not instead of them.
