The Importance of Routine Digital X-Rays
Safe, Accurate Diagnostics at Sand Canyon Dental
At Sand Canyon Dental in Irvine, we use advanced digital X-ray technology to safely and accurately assess your oral health. Digital X-rays are a vital tool for early detection and diagnosis, helping us create a personalized treatment plan that supports long-term dental wellness.
The Benefits of Digital Dental X-Rays
Digital X-rays produce clear, detailed images with significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays. This allows our team to detect cavities, bone loss, impacted teeth, infections, and other hidden dental issues early—often before you feel any symptoms. Digital imaging also makes it easy to share and store your records securely.
What to Expect During Your X-Ray Appointment
Digital X-rays are quick, comfortable, and non-invasive. Our team will position a small sensor in your mouth, which captures high-resolution images in seconds. These images appear instantly on our monitor, allowing your dentist to explain any findings and walk you through next steps.
Our Digital X-Ray Services Include:
Bitewing X-rays to detect cavities between teeth
Periapical X-rays for root and bone health
Panoramic X-rays for a full view of your mouth and jaw

How often do you need dental X-rays?
It depends on your age, your history of cavities and your gum health. Many adults with healthy teeth get bitewing X-rays (the ones that check between the back teeth) about once a year and a full set every few years. Children, people with frequent cavities and patients with gum disease may need them more often. Your dentist decides based on what your mouth needs, not a fixed schedule.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Yes. Digital X-rays use a very small amount of radiation, much less than older film X-rays, and only take a few seconds. We take only the images we need. If you are pregnant or think you might be, tell us before your visit so we can plan your care.
Cost and insurance
Most PPO dental plans, including Delta Dental, cover routine X-rays as part of preventive care, usually up to a set number per year. If you have recent X-rays from another dentist, we can often request them so you don't need new ones. We check your benefits before your visit.
Digital X-ray FAQ
What can dental X-rays show that an exam can't?
Cavities between teeth and under old fillings, bone loss from gum disease, infections at the root tip, and teeth that haven't come in yet, such as wisdom teeth.
How long does it take?
Usually just a few minutes. The images appear on screen right away, so your dentist can show you what they see.
Can I get a copy of my X-rays?
Yes. Because they are digital, we can share them with you or send them to another dentist or specialist.
